They're not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one can cost you more than the hire itself.

What's the difference?

With self-drive hire, you're responsible for transporting, operating and returning the machine — which usually means holding (or quickly obtaining) IPAF certification, understanding the specific model's controls, and being confident working safely at height. With operated hire, none of that is on you: a fully trained, insured operator drives the machine to site, sets up safely, and carries out the work.

But once you factor in certification (if you don't already hold it), the time spent learning an unfamiliar machine, and the insurance exposure if something goes wrong, it's rarely the saving it first appears to be — and for anything involving real height, it isn't worth the risk.
